Great article. Re your poll, I’m firmly pro choice, but feel it’s reasonable to have some broad restrictions in place in an effort to compromise. For example, no third term abortions UNLESS the mother’s life is at risk or other medical issues arise. The life and choice of the woman should always come first.
Thanks, Sabrina, for your comment. I agree but I also think this is more a question of who gets to decide. The reality of third term abortion is that they are always because of hard medical issues. Pete Buttigieg had a very concise response to this issue when he was campaigning for the Democratic nomination in 2019. He said, "'Let’s take ourselves let’s put ourselves in shoes of a woman in the situation, if it is that late in your pregnancy that means almost by definition, have you been expecting to carry it to term, we are talking about women who perhaps chosen a name, women who have purchased a crib, families that get most devastating medical news of their lifetime, something about health or the life mother that forces them to make an impossible choice.'" For him, the bottom line is that the woman, her family, and doctors--not the government--should make that call. Totally agree Robin. And yes that was well said by Pete. I feel like the far right has tried to position us as these extremists— hence my comment about “compromise”. I’m glad people like you are writing things like this. Trust me, I’m on board!
